The Rindler family has been involved in the egg farming community for more than four decades. The family owns and operates Prairie Star Farms, a third-generation farm with locations throughout northwest Ohio and Indiana.
Siblings Jay Rindler and Leah Knapke share insights on what it’s like to be Ohio egg farmers.
"I'm proud to be an Ohio egg farmer. Our family is committed to producing safe, high-quality eggs for consumers while giving back to our local community," says Jay.
What does it mean to be an Ohio egg farmer?
Jay: Prairie Star Farms started with my dad in 1981. Today, we offer a variety of eggs, including conventional and cage-free eggs in both cartons that you buy at the grocery store and on flats for foodservice organizations. I’m proud to be an Ohio egg farmer. Our family is committed to producing safe, high-quality eggs for consumers while giving back to our local community.
How do you ensure eggs are safe and of the highest quality?
Jay: On our farm, food safety is a top priority and everyone’s job. Every employee is required to complete a comprehensive training program regarding safe food-handling practices and procedures. Employees also are assigned to quality control and food safety assignments to ensure all internal and external standards are not just met, but exceeded.
What’s your favorite egg recipe?
Leah: Our mom’s Angel Food Cake recipe is a family favorite. The delicious dessert features 13 egg whites and is perfect for family celebrations or for a weeknight treat. I look forward to passing down the recipe to my daughter someday.
